Although vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a urinary tract disorder, the long-term consequences of recurrent infections and kidney damage can significantly impact a child's growth and development, leading to malnutrition and developmental delay.
The primary purpose of a voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) is to evaluate for vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), a condition where urine flows backward from the bladder into the ureters and possibly the kidneys. VUR can lead to recurrent urinary tract infections and even kidney damage. Therefore, VCUG is crucial for assessing the severity of reflux and guiding subsequent diagnosis and treatment.
Before the voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) procedure, children are typically asked to fast to prevent vomiting. Excessive fluid intake can increase bladder pressure and affect the test results. Additionally, a contrast agent is used during the VCUG to visualize the flow of urine under X-ray.
